What documents do I need for a Portuguese import V55/5?

Reviewed 2026-07-10

Short answer

Prepare the same UK permanent-import evidence: original Portuguese registration evidence, HMRC/NOVA confirmation, VAT/duty evidence if due, approval evidence and V55/5 support documents.

Official position

GOV.UK does not create a separate V55/5 route just because the vehicle comes from Portugal. It says permanent imports need HMRC/NOVA processing, any VAT or duty paid, proof of vehicle approval, and original imported-vehicle supporting documents.

What to do

1

Get the original Portuguese registration certificate or official registration evidence.

2

Keep purchase, collection, transport and customs evidence for HMRC and DVLA.

3

Check for CoC or approval evidence before filling technical V55/5 boxes.

4

Use a translation or covering note if the key identity and date evidence is not clear to DVLA.

Common mistakes

  • Assuming an EU origin removes the need to tell HMRC.
  • Sending copied registration papers instead of originals where DVLA requires originals.
  • Leaving approval fields blank without explaining the approval or exemption route.
