What documents do I need for a Dubai or UAE import V55/5?

Reviewed 2026-07-10

Short answer

Prepare UAE registration/export evidence, shipping and customs documents, HMRC/NOVA confirmation, VAT/duty evidence if due, approval evidence and V55/5 identity documents.

Official position

GOV.UK says imported vehicles need HMRC/NOVA processed, any VAT and customs duty paid, proof of vehicle approval and original foreign registration evidence. If a vehicle is classed as seriously damaged or non-repairable abroad, GOV.UK says it cannot be registered in the UK.

What to do

1

Keep UAE registration or export certificate evidence and make sure it shows the correct VIN.

2

Keep shipping, customs/MRN, invoice and VAT/duty payment evidence.

3

Check damage, salvage or non-repairable status before spending on IVA or V55/5.

4

Confirm the approval route and UK conversion work before completing the V55/5.

Common mistakes

  • Ignoring auction or export damage descriptions from the UAE paperwork.
  • Assuming GCC specification is automatically UK-compliant.
  • Sending DVLA copies or screenshots instead of original supporting documents where originals are required.
