What is a daylight MOT and does DVLA accept it?
Reviewed 2026-07-10
Short answer
A daylight MOT is not a separate DVLA registration category. It usually means a motorcycle is tested with lighting limits or advisories, but DVLA may still need MSVA, import and identity evidence.
Official position
The motorcycle MOT manual includes cases where headlamps and stop lamps are not needed, such as motorcycles without front and rear position lamps or with those lamps permanently disconnected, painted over or masked. That MOT position does not remove MSVA, NOVA or DVLA registration requirements.
What to do
Ask the MOT station exactly what will be tested and what advisory will be recorded.
Do not rely on a daylight MOT if the vehicle needs MSVA or Partial MSVA.
Remember the vehicle must still be roadworthy and used within the limitations implied by its lighting equipment.
Keep MOT, approval, insurance and identity evidence together for the V55/5 pack.
Common mistakes
- Thinking daylight MOT is a DVLA form or exemption.
- Using a daylight MOT to avoid required MSVA.
- Fitting temporary lighting only for the test while leaving the registration evidence unresolved.
