Does an imported motorcycle need MSVA?
Reviewed 2026-07-10
Short answer
It depends on approval evidence, age and vehicle type. If the motorcycle does not have the required GB approval, GOV.UK says you must use MSVA.
Official position
GOV.UK says motorcycles, 3-wheeled and light 4-wheeled vehicles must have provisional GB type approval in Great Britain. If the vehicle does not have that approval, you must use the MSVA scheme. MSVA can apply to solo motorcycles, mopeds, motorcycle combinations, motor tricycles and quadricycles.
What to do
Check whether the bike has a CoC, provisional GB type approval, ECWVTA or another acceptable approval route.
If it is under 10 years old, not previously UK registered and lacks the required approval, check MSVA eligibility.
If it has a CoC but is not equipped for Great Britain, check whether Partial MSVA is needed.
Keep the MAC, CoC or exemption evidence with the V55/5 pack.
Common mistakes
- Assuming an overseas registration document replaces approval evidence.
- Assuming every motorcycle import needs full MSVA.
- Forgetting that Partial MSVA can apply for headlamp, speedometer or mirror changes.
