What do I put in V55/5 box 72 type approval exemption?
Reviewed 2026-07-10
Short answer
Only use box 72 when the vehicle is genuinely exempt from type approval, and give the full reason for the exemption.
Official position
The V355/5 guidance says that if the vehicle does not need evidence of type approval because of how it is constructed, leave box 11 blank and fill in question 72. It also says that if the vehicle is exempt from type approval, you need to give the full reason, for example Enduro Bike.
What to do
First check whether you have CoC, IVA, GB conversion IVA or MSVA evidence.
If the vehicle is exempt, explain the actual exemption clearly in box 72.
Keep supporting evidence for the exemption, such as age, construction or vehicle-type evidence.
Do not use box 72 because you simply cannot find the type approval number.
Common mistakes
- Writing "N/A" with no exemption reason.
- Using box 72 to avoid IVA or MSVA when approval is required.
- Putting an exemption in box 72 while also entering inconsistent type approval details in box 11.
