What if I have no type approval number for V55/5?
Reviewed 2026-07-10
Short answer
Do not invent a type approval number. Use the approval evidence you have, or the correct exemption route if the vehicle is exempt.
Official position
GOV.UK says imported vehicles may need proof of approval such as a CoC, GB conversion IVA, IVA or MSVA. Some older vehicles are exempt, but DVLA still needs enough evidence to understand why.
What to do
Check whether the vehicle has a European CoC, IVA certificate, GB conversion IVA certificate or MSVA certificate.
If the vehicle is old enough or otherwise exempt, prepare a clear exemption explanation and supporting evidence.
Use the type approval exemption area rather than making up a number.
Keep the approval or exemption evidence with the V55/5 pack.
Common mistakes
- Copying a type approval number from another vehicle.
- Assuming "no CoC" means no approval evidence is needed.
- Using a vague exemption explanation with no proof of age or approval route.
