Classics & age evidence

What evidence gets an age-related registration?

Reviewed 2026-07-10

Short answer

Strong age and identity evidence: original registration documents where available, manufacturer or recognised club evidence, readable VIN/chassis/frame number, and consistent import or ownership documents.

Official position

GOV.UK says old vehicles may be registered under an original or age-related number if the evidence supports it. Reconstructed classics need a club report, parts statement, type approval where necessary and receipts, and DVLA assigns an age-related number based on the youngest component used.

What to do

1

Collect original foreign registration papers, UK logbook, title, export certificate or manufacturer records.

2

Get dating evidence from the manufacturer or a recognised owners club where original records are missing.

3

Make sure VIN, chassis or frame identity matches every document.

4

For reconstructed classics, gather club inspection, V627/1, receipts and component dates.

Common mistakes

  • Assuming the oldest component sets the registration age.
  • Ignoring mismatched frame and engine numbers.
  • Submitting a club dating letter with no import or ownership trail.
