Can a barn-find classic with no paperwork be registered?
Reviewed 2026-07-10
Short answer
Possibly, but it is evidence-led. You need to prove identity, age, ownership chain, import status if relevant, and whether it was previously UK registered.
Official position
GOV.UK says old vehicles may need new-registration instructions, V765 for original-number claims, owner-club endorsement and documentary evidence linking the vehicle to the original number. Imported vehicles normally need original foreign documents, or a letter explaining why they are unavailable plus acceptable dating evidence.
What to do
Find the chassis, frame or VIN number before spending money on registration.
Search for old V5C, buff logbook, foreign registration certificate, title, invoices, import papers or club records.
Use a recognised club or manufacturer dating route where normal documents are missing.
Resolve NOVA/HMRC status if the vehicle was imported and never registered in the UK.
Common mistakes
- Assuming a dating certificate replaces proof of ownership or import status.
- Trying to register a vehicle with unreadable or altered identity marks.
- Expecting DVLA to issue an age-related registration from photos alone.
