NOVA & HMRC

How long does NOVA take to process?

Reviewed 2026-07-10

Short answer

GOV.UK does not give one universal processing time. The key rule is that DVLA registration must wait until HMRC says the NOVA application has been processed.

Official position

GOV.UK says HMRC will tell you when your NOVA application has been processed, and you cannot register the vehicle with DVLA until it is. Processing can depend on whether documents, value evidence, VAT/duty and vehicle identity evidence are complete.

What to do

1

Check who made the declaration: you, a shipping company, customs agent or HMRC CARS.

2

Confirm HMRC has the MRN or customs evidence, invoice or valuation evidence and official VIN/chassis evidence.

3

Resolve any VAT, duty, relief or valuation question quickly.

4

Wait for processed confirmation before posting the V55/5.

Common mistakes

  • Posting V55/5 because the 14-day notification deadline was met, even though NOVA is not processed.
  • Assuming a customs clearance document is the same as processed NOVA.
  • Failing to chase an agent who submitted incomplete identity or valuation details.
