Can DVLA see NOVA automatically?

Reviewed 2026-07-10

Short answer

DVLA registration depends on HMRC/NOVA being processed, but you should still keep written NOVA or HMRC evidence tied to the vehicle VIN.

Official position

GOV.UK says HMRC will tell you when the NOVA application has been processed and that you cannot register your vehicle with DVLA until it is. The practical issue is whether the processed HMRC record matches the vehicle you are applying to register.

What to do

1

Keep the NOVA reference, HMRC CARS email, agent confirmation or customs-agent evidence.

2

Check the VIN or chassis number, make and import details match the V55/5 pack.

3

If someone else made the declaration, get written proof before posting to DVLA.

4

Do not rely on a seller saying “it is on the system” without seeing vehicle-specific evidence.

Common mistakes

  • Assuming DVLA can fix an incorrect HMRC record from the V55/5 alone.
  • Accepting a NOVA screenshot that does not show the vehicle identity.
  • Posting the V55/5 while HMRC processing is still pending.
