Do imported headlights need converting before MOT?

Reviewed 2026-07-10

Short answer

They must meet the relevant MOT or approval standard. For many imports, headlamp aim and beam pattern need checking before the MOT or IVA/MSVA route.

Official position

The MOT manual says headlamp aim and beam image are testable items, and that masks or converter kits can be acceptable for certain right-hand dip lamps if they alter the beam for UK use. GOV.UK also says imported vehicles may need approval, and EU left-hand-drive vehicles may need GB conversion IVA.

What to do

1

Check whether the vehicle is right-hand drive, left-hand drive, EU-registered, non-EU, car, van or motorcycle.

2

Have the beam pattern checked before the MOT or approval test.

3

Use proper replacement lamps, adjustment, masks or converter kits where the test standard allows them.

4

Do not assume a foreign MOT, shaken, TUV or roadworthiness certificate proves UK compliance.

Common mistakes

  • Only converting the speedometer and forgetting headlamp beam direction.
  • Using temporary travel stickers where a permanent approval route needs stronger evidence.
  • Assuming an MOT pass alone always replaces vehicle approval evidence.
