Can I drive an imported vehicle from the port to my house?
Reviewed 2026-07-10
Short answer
Do not assume you can. GOV.UK warns you can be prosecuted for using the vehicle on a public road before the import steps are complete, except for a pre-booked MOT or vehicle approval test.
Official position
GOV.UK says permanent imports must complete HMRC, approval, DVLA registration, tax and insurance steps. It also says you can be prosecuted if you use the vehicle on a public road before completing those steps unless you are driving it to a pre-booked MOT or vehicle approval test.
What to do
Arrange transporter, trailer or recovery movement from the port to home, storage or a workshop.
If you are driving to a pre-booked MOT or approval test, keep the appointment evidence with you.
Make sure the vehicle is insured by VIN or chassis number before any permitted road journey.
Do not treat foreign plates, port paperwork or a pending V55/5 as permission for normal road use.
Common mistakes
- Thinking port-to-home is automatically treated like driving to a test.
- Using foreign plates after becoming a UK permanent import case.
- Driving an unroadworthy car because the V55/5 pack is nearly ready.
