Do I need NOVA for a Northern Ireland vehicle?
Reviewed 2026-07-10
Short answer
If it is already registered in Northern Ireland, it is already a UK-registered vehicle and is not normally a V55/5 import case.
Official position
GOV.UK says UK residents can move a vehicle freely between Great Britain and Northern Ireland if it is registered in either country and other personal-use conditions apply. NOVA rules are different for imports into Northern Ireland from the EU or from outside the EU.
What to do
Check whether the vehicle has an existing UK V5C or Northern Ireland registration record.
If it is already UK registered, use keeper/address/logbook processes rather than treating it as a first registration import.
If it came into Northern Ireland from outside the EU or from the EU and is not already UK registered, check the specific HMRC import route.
Do not use V55/5 just because the car came from Northern Ireland if it already has a UK registration record.
Common mistakes
- Confusing Republic of Ireland vehicles with Northern Ireland vehicles.
- Starting a V55/5 application for a vehicle that already has a UK registration record.
- Assuming every vehicle crossing the Irish Sea is an import.
