Do I need NOVA for an Isle of Man vehicle?

Reviewed 2026-07-10

Short answer

If the vehicle is registered in the Isle of Man, GOV.UK says you do not need to make a NOVA application.

Official position

GOV.UK says that if the vehicle is registered in the Isle of Man, you do not need to make a NOVA application. You send a completed V55 form and the Isle of Man registration document to DVLA instead.

What to do

1

Confirm the vehicle is actually registered in the Isle of Man.

2

Keep the Isle of Man registration document with the V55 application pack.

3

If it is not registered in the Isle of Man, or still has UK plates, follow the separate GOV.UK instructions and contact the imports and exports helpline for the correct form.

4

Still complete the DVLA registration, tax and supporting-document steps.

Common mistakes

  • Assuming every vehicle located on the Isle of Man gets the exception.
  • Losing the Isle of Man registration document before applying.
  • Confusing the NOVA exception with an exemption from DVLA registration.
