Can I MOT an imported vehicle without a UK registration number?

Reviewed 2026-07-10

Short answer

Yes. DVSA says an unregistered vehicle can still be MOT tested; the tester can create a record without a registration mark.

Official position

DVSA MOT guidance explains that testers can create an MOT record for an unregistered vehicle. The vehicle still needs to be identifiable by VIN, chassis number or frame number, and it must be safe enough to test.

What to do

1

Tell the garage in advance that this is an import with no UK registration number.

2

Give the VIN, chassis number or frame number exactly as it appears on the vehicle.

3

Bring the foreign registration document, export certificate or title if you have it.

4

Arrange VIN or chassis-number insurance before any permitted road movement.

Common mistakes

  • Believing a UK registration number is required before an MOT can be recorded.
  • Driving an unsafe restoration project to a test because an MOT is booked.
  • Using a different VIN format from the one on the import and V55/5 paperwork.
