Can I get number plates before the V5C arrives?

Reviewed 2026-07-10

Short answer

Usually you need DVLA evidence that you are allowed to use the registration number. The V5C is the normal proof, but GOV.UK lists other accepted authorisation documents.

Official position

GOV.UK says number plates can only be made by a registered number plate supplier. The supplier must see original documents proving your identity and that you are allowed to use the registration number, such as a V5C, V948 authorisation or other listed DVLA/registration evidence.

What to do

1

Wait for DVLA to issue the registration number before ordering plates.

2

Use a registered number plate supplier.

3

Bring identity documents and one accepted proof that you can use the registration number.

4

Do not make or display plates just because you guessed the age-related mark or saw it in correspondence.

Common mistakes

  • Ordering plates before DVLA has issued the registration.
  • Assuming the MOT VIN record can be used as a UK registration number.
  • Using non-compliant plates because the vehicle is an import or classic.
