Can a customs agent do NOVA for me?
Reviewed 2026-07-10
Short answer
Yes, in shipped-vehicle cases GOV.UK says your shipping company or customs agent can make the NOVA declaration, often for a fee.
Official position
For non-VAT registered companies and private individuals having the vehicle shipped, GOV.UK says the NOVA declaration can be made by the shipping company or customs agent, or by HMRC CARS on your behalf. It still must be done within 14 days of bringing the vehicle in.
What to do
Ask the agent in writing whether NOVA is included or charged separately.
Get the NOVA reference or HMRC confirmation after they submit it.
Ask for MRN, C88, E2, invoice and duty/VAT payment evidence for your records.
Check the VIN or chassis number on the agent paperwork before using it for the V55/5.
Common mistakes
- Assuming customs clearance automatically includes NOVA.
- Letting the agent submit with an abbreviated or incorrect VIN.
- Not asking for evidence until months later when the V55/5 is rejected.
