Will DVLA inspect my imported vehicle?

Reviewed 2026-07-10

Short answer

DVLA might inspect it. GOV.UK says DVLA might ask to inspect an imported vehicle, and V355/5 says DVLA will contact you if inspection is needed.

Official position

GOV.UK says DVLA might ask to inspect an imported vehicle. The new-registration guidance also says DVLA might need to inspect the vehicle after you apply. V355/5 says your vehicle may need to be inspected and DVLA will contact you if this is needed.

What to do

1

Make sure the VIN, chassis or frame number is readable and matches the paperwork.

2

Keep the vehicle accessible and do not dismantle key identity areas while the application is pending.

3

Keep copies of NOVA, foreign documents, approval evidence, MOT and photos of identity marks.

4

Respond quickly if DVLA contacts you about inspection.

Common mistakes

  • Assuming DVLA inspection only happens for kit cars.
  • Changing or obscuring VIN/chassis evidence after posting the V55/5.
  • Ignoring DVLA contact because the application has already been posted.
