Can I register an import without a foreign registration document?
Reviewed 2026-07-10
Short answer
Sometimes, but it is a risk. DVLA normally asks for the original foreign registration certificate for imported vehicles.
Official position
GOV.UK says imported vehicles need extra supporting documents, including the original non-UK registration document or certificate. DVLA guidance allows other age evidence in some older-vehicle cases, but that is not the same as saying missing papers are harmless.
What to do
Ask why the foreign document is missing and get the explanation in writing.
Look for substitute identity and age evidence: export certificate, title, manufacturer letter, dating certificate or recognised club evidence.
Check the VIN or chassis number on the vehicle against every document you do have.
Expect DVLA to ask more questions, inspect the vehicle, or issue a less desirable registration outcome if evidence is weak.
Common mistakes
- Treating a receipt as a replacement for proof of foreign registration.
- Buying a vehicle with no title, no export document and no dating evidence at registered-vehicle price.
- Assuming DVLA will issue an age-related registration without strong age evidence.
