Can I register an import without a foreign registration document?

Reviewed 2026-07-10

Short answer

Sometimes, but it is a risk. DVLA normally asks for the original foreign registration certificate for imported vehicles.

Official position

GOV.UK says imported vehicles need extra supporting documents, including the original non-UK registration document or certificate. DVLA guidance allows other age evidence in some older-vehicle cases, but that is not the same as saying missing papers are harmless.

What to do

1

Ask why the foreign document is missing and get the explanation in writing.

2

Look for substitute identity and age evidence: export certificate, title, manufacturer letter, dating certificate or recognised club evidence.

3

Check the VIN or chassis number on the vehicle against every document you do have.

4

Expect DVLA to ask more questions, inspect the vehicle, or issue a less desirable registration outcome if evidence is weak.

Common mistakes

  • Treating a receipt as a replacement for proof of foreign registration.
  • Buying a vehicle with no title, no export document and no dating evidence at registered-vehicle price.
  • Assuming DVLA will issue an age-related registration without strong age evidence.
