Road tax must be paid when you first register a vehicle, and then renewed annually. The renewal date is shown on your V5C (log book) and you can renew up to 2 months before it expires.
Pure electric vehicles (0 CO2 emissions) are currently exempt from road tax. However, from April 2025, electric vehicles will start paying the standard rate (£180) if they cost over £40,000 when new.
Vehicles manufactured before 1st January 1984 are exempt from road tax as "historic vehicles". You still need to register for exemption annually with DVLA.
